Whether you're just starting to watch the European Championship 2024 now, or you've been an avid watcher the whole time, here are some quick and easy summaries so you know what you'll be watching in the coming days. What games will you be following?
About Switzerland V.S Italy @ 9am:
Switzerland struggled in the Euro 2024 Qualifiers, sending their coach, Murat Yakin, into a light of criticism. Seemingly unhappy with the situation the national team was in, Giorgio Contini, a previous Swiss head coach, was appointed to new assistant coach. Soon after this, their formation changed to a back 3. Their largest current problem stems from their attack, which comes from the lack of strong strikers.
Italy is known to champion a "door bolt system", which is reserved for rosters that lack a proper means to attack. Saying this, Luciano Spalleti, a tactical Italian weapon, tends to adapt to his opponent on game day. The unpredictability of the Italian formation is part of what makes Italian tactics so intriguing.
These two teams are predicted to tie, and advance to a penalty shoot out.
About England v.s Slovakia @ 9am:
England is a fan favorite to make it to the finals, but have had a painfully underwhelming performance thus far. Their place in the bracket does provide a promising way to make it to the finals. Englands attack has still yet to fully develop, but their defense has proved to be hard to breach.
Slovakia is already coming off of an upset against Belgium, with a 1-0 win. With nothing to lose they are hoping to continue the momentum and come out with another upset win against England.
The predicted score is in favor of the popular England, with a prediction of 2-0.
About Germany v.s Denmark @ 12pm:
Germany has had a true offensive force in the group stage. They have had a strong momentum from the group stage, meaning they will feel comfortably confident going into the stage of 16. Germany will be the expected winner and fan favorite of this game.
Denmark seems to be confident in the challenge against the seemingly strong run of Germany. Denmarks coach Hjulmand has struggled to get the best out of their star striker, Rasmus Hojlund, subbing him in all three matches.
This is the only game in the round of 16 that features two unbeaten teams. The score prediction is 2-1, in favor of Germany.
About Spain V.s Georgia @ 12pm:
Georgia has had an extremely large emotional momentum that's culminated over this tournament. This is their first time making it into Euros, and they are really making their mark. A key element of Georgias game is how consistent their play style is to their culture. Kvaratshkelia expressed to the New York Times that individual showmanship and expressiveness form a core part of Georgian culture, and that is reflected in their game. Many say this is the most surprising team of the tournament so far, and have drummed up lots of attention.
Spain is once again a strong team in the tournament, maintaining a clean sheet in all of their group stage wins. They are coming out of a challenging group stage, facing hard opponents, and will have that mentality going into this round of 16 game. Spain has the experience and the known talent to win this game, but the question is, will the experience of Spain or Georgias passion take each team to the next round?
If Georgia were to win this game it would be one of the largest upsets in Euros 2024, but the prediction says a 2-0 win for Spain.
About France v.s Belgium @9am:
These two rival countries are ranked to be the most interesting game to watch in these Euros 2024 round of 16. Both teams are playing each other because they each failed to win their respective groups. France and Belgium are two teams stacked with talent, and are leaving the group stages with much to prove. Both of these teams have struggled to find the back of the net, leaving the score prediction to a 1-0 win for France.
About Portugal v.s Slovenia @12pm:
Portugal will be coming into the round of 16 after a shocking 0-2 loss against Georgia. At an odd turn, Portugals star Ronaldo, for the first time in his career, has failed to score in the group stage of an international tournament. Portugal will be the likely favorite of this matchup.
Slovenia will likely take the tactic that they have for most of the tournament, sitting back and making their opponent frustrated. They are aware of their position to fight for an upset against Portugal, as they already had one under their belt with England.
The predicted score of this game is a 2-1 win for Portugal.
About Romania v.s Netherlands @9am:
In the past, for the last 4 times these two teams have come head to head, the Dutch have dominated. Across the group stage the Netherlands were able to show an excellent performance, making them strong going into the round of 16. Romania on the other hand, has showed less of a remarkable performance, despite scraping out in first place. Saying this, with the strong positioning of Romania, the score prediction is 1-0 Romania.
About Austria v.s Turkey @12pm:
Turkey has struggled to maintain a consistent lineup for the duration of the tournament, with their captain Calhanoglu currently sitting on a suspension. Both Austria and Turkey are known as two of the most entertaining teams of the tournament. Austria has few "stars" on their roster, but nonetheless were able to beat Poland and the Netherlands.
The predicted score of this game is a 2-1 win for Austria in extra time.
